How to Talk to Your Kids About Addiction
Talking to your kids about addiction is uncomfortable. But avoiding the conversation is far more dangerous than having it.
Start early with age-appropriate language. Young children can understand that 'some substances can be very harmful and make people sick.' Teenagers need more direct conversations about peer pressure, the science of addiction, and your family's values.
Be honest about your own family's experience if applicable. Kids often know more than we think they do. Secrecy breeds shame; honesty breeds trust.
Most importantly, anchor the conversation in faith. Help your children understand that their worth comes from God, not from peer approval. Teach them that it's okay to say no and that asking for help is a sign of strength.
