Loving Someone Through Addiction — A Guide for Families

    By Caleb Billings

Loving someone with an addiction is one of the most painful experiences in the world. You watch them self-destruct while feeling powerless to stop it.

First, know this: their addiction is not your fault. You didn't cause it, you can't control it, and you can't cure it. But you CAN love them through it — with healthy boundaries.

Set boundaries, not ultimatums. Boundaries protect you; ultimatums try to control them. 'I love you, but I won't give you money for substances' is a boundary. 'If you don't stop, I'm leaving forever' is an ultimatum.

Take care of yourself. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Seek your own support — counseling, prayer, support groups, trusted friends. Your well-being is not selfish; it's essential.
