Praying Through the Pain: A Guide to Honest Prayer in Recovery

    By Caleb Billings

If you think you need to clean up your language, compose perfect sentences, or feel spiritual enough before you pray — you're wrong.

The Psalms are full of raw, honest, sometimes angry prayers. David cried out, 'How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?' (Psalm 13:1). That's not polished. That's real.

In recovery, your prayers might sound like, 'God, I'm barely holding on. I want to use so badly right now. Please help me.' That's a perfect prayer.

God is not impressed by eloquence. He's moved by honesty. Pour out your heart to Him — the good, the bad, and the ugly. He can handle it all.
