The Prodigal Son and the Addict — Why This Parable Matters
Luke 15:11-32 tells the story of a son who demanded his inheritance, left home, and wasted everything on wild living. When he hit rock bottom — literally feeding pigs and envying their food — he came to his senses and returned home.
This is the story of every addict. The initial thrill. The gradual descent. The rock bottom. And hopefully — the decision to come home.
But the most important part of the story isn't the son's return. It's the father's response: 'While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.'
God doesn't wait for you to clean up before He welcomes you back. He runs to you. He embraces you. He celebrates your return. That's the mulligan. That's the gospel.
