    Healing from Trauma

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and addiction frequently occur together. Many people who experience trauma — combat, abuse, accidents, violence, or loss — turn to substances or behaviors to numb the pain. This is not weakness; it's a human response to unbearable suffering.

An estimated 8 million Americans have PTSD in any given year, and studies show that people with PTSD are significantly more likely to develop substance use disorders. Veterans, first responders, abuse survivors, and crime victims are particularly vulnerable.

Trauma-informed care recognizes that healing must address the root cause — the trauma itself — not just the resulting addiction. Professional PTSD treatment (such as EMDR, cognitive processing therapy, or prolonged exposure therapy) is essential.

Faith adds a dimension that trauma therapy alone cannot: the knowledge that God was present in your suffering, that He weeps with you, and that He can bring beauty from ashes. The gospel offers restoration, not just recovery.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

    — Psalm 147:3

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can faith heal PTSD?

Faith provides hope, meaning, and community — powerful healing forces. However, PTSD is a clinical condition that benefits greatly from professional treatment. We encourage both faith and professional care.

Do you work with veterans who have PTSD?

Yes. We offer specific support for veterans dealing with PTSD and addiction. Visit our recovery for veterans page for more information.

    Is trauma-related addiction my fault?

No. Turning to substances to cope with unbearable pain is a human response, not a moral failing. God meets you with compassion, not condemnation.
