    Recovery from Grief & Loss

Grief is one of the most painful human experiences. The death of a loved one, divorce, job loss, or other significant losses can create emotional pain so intense that substances or behaviors become a way to cope. Grief-driven addiction is more common than many realize.

When we lose someone or something central to our identity, the void can feel unbearable. Alcohol, drugs, gambling, and other addictions temporarily numb that void — but they prevent genuine healing and extend the grieving process indefinitely.

God is intimately familiar with grief. Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus. The Psalms are filled with laments. Scripture makes clear that mourning is not only acceptable but honored by God. He promises to be close to the brokenhearted.

The Mulligan Mission encourages those grieving to seek professional grief counseling while also leaning into faith, prayer, and community. Our mentorship program connects people with compassionate believers who can walk alongside them through loss.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

    — Matthew 5:4

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to turn to substances during grief?

It's common but not healthy. Many people self-medicate during grief, but substances prevent genuine healing. If you're using substances to cope with loss, reaching out for support is a courageous step.

    How long does grief last?

There is no timeline for grief. Everyone processes loss differently. What matters is that you process it — with support, faith, and community rather than through substances.

Can faith help me through grief without substances?

Yes. Faith provides comfort, community, hope for eternity, and the presence of a God who understands suffering. Combined with professional grief support, faith is a powerful resource.
